Mustangs slip to No. 6 in NABC Division II Poll

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State slipped one spot to No. 6 in the latest National Basketball Coaches' Association Division II poll released Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Mustangs had a six-game winning streak snapped at West Texas A&M last Wednesday in Canyon, then recovered to claim a 79-64 win over Eastern New Mexico Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum Saturday to clinch a share of its sixth Lone Star Conference title.
 
The Mustangs (23-3) head into the LSC postseason tournament as the league's top seed. MSU faces Texas A&M-Commerce in the opening round Wednesday night at the Allen (Texas) Events Center. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m.
 
Midwestern is one of six teams from the South Central Region to receive mention in the poll joining No. 7 Tarleton State, No. 18 Northwest Missouri State, No. 19 Missouri Southern and No. 21 Arkansas Tech while Washburn (Kan.) is receiving votes.
 
Defending national champion Bellarmine (Ky.) reclaimed top billing as the unanimous No. 1 followed by Colorado Mines at No. 2 and Alabama-Huntsville at No. 3 while last week's top-ranked West Liberty (W. Va.) squad slipped to No. 4.
 
Shaw (N.C.), MSU, Tarleton State, Christian Brothers (Tenn.), Indiana (Pa.) and Northern Kentucky round out the Top 10.
 
Western Washington tips off the second 10 at No. 11 followed by Metropolitan State (Colo.), Southern Indiana, Kentucky Wesleyan, Alaska-Anchorage, Anderson (S.C.), Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.), Northwest Missouri, Missouri Southern and Indianapolis (Ind.).
 
Arkansas Tech, Charleston (W. Va.), District of Columbia, Franklin Pierce (N.H.) and Seattle Pacific (Wash.) round out the poll at Nos. 21-25.
 
Notables
* Midwestern State clinched a share of its sixth Lone Star Conference championship with a 79-64 win over Eastern New Mexico Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
* MSU has won more LSC titles than any other program since joining the league prior to the 1996-97 season. Midwestern has six titles followed by Central Oklahoma with four, West Texas A&M with three, Tarleton State with two and one each by Northeastern State and Texas A&M-Commerce.
* MSU completed its eighth unbeaten regular season on its home floor D.L. Ligon Coliseum which also includes clean slates in 1973-74, 1974-75, 1975-76, 1985-86, 1992-93, 1999-00 and 2009-10.
* The Mustangs have won 15 consecutive games under the dome and 56 of its last 57 which is the fourth best one-loss home streak in all of NCAA scholarship hoops only behind Findlay (85-1), Kansas (62-1) and West Liberty (62-1).
* The Mustangs are one of six NCAA Division II programs to tally at least 100 wins since the start of the 2008-09 season joining West Liberty, Bellarmine, Augusta State, Findlay and Indiana (Pa.).
* MSU has limited each of its last seven opponents to 64 points or less during regulation.
* The Mustangs have won each of the 18 games in which they held a halftime lead.
* MSU is also 21-0 in games that it out-rebounds the opposition.
* MSU has been whistled for at least 11 more fouls than its opponent in each of its three losses at Eastern New Mexico (33-22), at Tarleton State (38-22) and at West Texas A&M (24-13).
* Senior guard Michael Loyd has scored 10-or-more points in each of his last four games and 12 of his last 13 and has knocked down 9 of his 16 shots from behind the arc (56.3 percent) over his last three outings.
* All nine of senior guard Keonte' Logan's shots over the last five games have come from beyond the arc - he has made seven of them.
* Senior forward David Terrell has connected on 16-of-17 shots over his last four games and now has a team-high 39 dunks this season. He leads the LSC with a field goal percentage of .698.
* Midwestern State is 18-6 in 11 LSC Postseason Tournaments including an 8-3 mark in the quarterfinals, a 5-3 record in the semifinals and a perfect 5-0 run in championship games.
* The 1999 and 2011 Kirk Hill Award winner Nick Gholson was diagnosed with colon cancer last week and will miss his first MSU playoff game since taking over the beat in the 1979-80 season. The streak includes 89 straight games over 32 seasons.
