WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State finished 16th in the final NCAA Division II Poll released Monday by the American Football Coaches' Association.

The Mustangs captured their second consecutive and third Lone Star Conference championship in the last four years finishing this season with a 9-2 mark.

Midwestern advanced to the NCAA Division II postseason for the fifth time in school history falling to No. 15 Indianapolis (Ind.) 31-14 in the opening round.

The Mustangs are one of nine teams from Super Region Four to receive mention in the poll joined by No. 4 West Texas A&M, No. 6 Colorado State-Pueblo, No. 15 Indianapolis, No. 18 Chadron State (Neb.) and No. 24 Missouri S&T while Saginaw Valley State (Mich.), Grand Valley State (Mich.) and Michigan Tech all received votes.

Valdosta State (Ga.) claimed the national championship with a 35-7 win over No. 2 Winston-Salem State (N.C.) Saturday in Florence, Ala.

Midwestern State has received votes in 83 of the last 84 polls dating back to the 2006 season.

MSU has received a ranking in the final AFCA poll on two occasions as the Mustangs earned an 8
th-place ranking following the 2011 campaign.
