MSU announces 2012 Hall of Honor Class

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- The Midwestern State Athletic Department is set to induct three outstanding former student athletes into its 2012 Hall of Honor class during Homecoming festivities Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

This year's honorees include women's basketball standout Julie Skelton-White (1979-81), high scoring men's basketball star Roger Ellis (1958-62), football All-American Lavern Robbins (1952) and volleyball standout Sheila Farrar-Beeson (1985-88).

The induction ceremony will be conducted prior to halftime Homecoming festivities during MSU's football game against Angelo State Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Julie Skelton-White (1979-81)

Julie Skelton-White made an instant splash to start her two-year collegiate career at Midwestern State. And her mark on the record book remains three decades later.

The 5-3 guard from tiny Goree, Texas earned SWIAW All-State and All-Region honors while setting school records with 110 assists and 178 steals. Tabbed "a diminutive stellar guard as a team player from the first toss up" by MSU legend Dr. D.L. Ligon, Skelton-White helped the Lady Indians to the TAIAW state semifinals as a from in 1979-80.

She set the current school single-season mark with 241 assists while making 119 steals and averaging 9.7 points a game during her sophomore season as MSU advanced to SWAIAW Division II Regionals in Pineville, La.

Though she played just two seasons, Skelton-White remains third on MSU's all-time assists chart with 351 and is second in career steals with 297.

Roger Ellis (1958-62)

Roger Ellis was born to score the basketball.

And he definitely left a lasting impression on the crowd gathered at Hardin Gym on Feb. 27, 1962 when poured in a school record 46 points against McMurry to finish his career with a then-school record 1,356 career points.

The single-game scoring mark would remain in the books for the next 50 years, but the Indians narrowly missed out on the NAIA National Tournament that season despite Ellis leading the team with 20.3 points while grabbing 8.4 rebounds a game alongside MSU legend John Henry Young.

The 6-6 forward from Dallas spent his freshman season of 1958-59 on the junior varsity squad then tallied 6.7 points and 4.9 rebounds in 32 games during his first season on the varsity quad as a sophomore.

Ellis erupted for 15 games with at least 20 points and scored 30-or-more on five occasions while averaging 21.1 points and 8.5 rebounds a contest as a junior.

Laverne Robbins (1952)

Laverne Robbins earned Associated Press Little All-America second-team honors in his lone season at Midwestern State in 1952.

The offensive tackle helped the Indians to a 6-5 mark then was selected in the 22nd round of the 1953 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers with the 262nd overall pick.

He was the third football player in Midwestern State history to earn AP Little All-America honors following Willie Bigham in 1949 and Jess Stiles in 1951.

Robbins will be posthumously inducted into MSU's Hall of Honor.

Sheila Farrar-Beeson (1985-88)

Sheila Farrar-Beeson played a key role in building Midwestern State's volleyball tradition after committing to the first-year varsity program in the spring of 1985.

The 6-0 outside hitter from North Richland Hills served as a key building block under coach Dave Simeone for her first two seasons then with Dave Hawk as a junior and senior.

Farrar-Beeson grew into a two-time NAIA All-District 8 performer during her junior and senior seasons while helping the Lady Indians to a 33-12 mark and to their first district title in 1988.

She graduated as MSU's all-time leader in kills (898), kills per set (3.82) and remains the program's most efficient attacker posting a .357 career attack percentage.
