WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State matched the highest national ranking in program history Wednesday as the Mustangs moved up one spot to No. 10 in the latest United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association Top 35.
The Mustangs reached 10th in the final regular season poll last season after claiming their first South Central Region title in 2011 before finishing 11th at the NCAA Division II National Championships in Spokane, Wash.
Midwestern is coming off an eighth-place showing at the Division I laden Rim Rock Farm Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of Kansas last weekend in Lawrence.
Juniors
Ashley Flores and
Janel Campbell paced a team effort that netted wins over Big 10 Nebraska and Big 12 Texas Tech and finished 95 points better than Regis (Colo.), which carried a regional No. 10 ranking this week.
The Mustangs aer one of five teams from a strong South Central Region to receive mention in the poll as No. 2 Adams State (Colo.) and No. 4 Western State (Colo.) retained its positions while MSU was up one spot to No. 10, Colorado Mines jumped five spots to No. 20 and Colorado-Colorado Springs was up three places to No. 28.
A strong trio from the Lone Star Conference appears poised to make a run at the poll as West Texas A&M, Incarnate Word and Eastern New Mexico are ranked 6th-8th respectively in the latest USTFCCCA South Central Regional Rankings released earlier this week.
Midwestern State hosts the Sikes Senter Cross Country Carnival Saturday at the former Henrietta Country Club. Races begin at 9 a.m.
