AFCA POLL: Mustangs move ahead one spot to No. 12

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State claimed its fifth-straight win to move up one spot to No. 12 in the latest American Football Coaches' Association Division II Top 25 Poll released Monday morning.
 
The Mustangs scored two touchdowns in the final seven minutes Saturday to claim a 35-28 come-from-behind win over Angelo State to move to 5-1 on the season and avoided adding to the seven ranked teams which tasted defeat last weekend.
 
Defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Pittsburg State (Kan.) dropped 31-21 decision to No. 7 Northwest Missouri State, while Missouri Southern stunned No. 4 Missouri Western 31-30 in the MIAA.
 
Unranked Northern Michigan clubbed No. 14 Grand Valley State (Mich.) 38-10 to send the Lakers to their second consecutive defeat. GVSU was ranked No. 2 two weeks ago.
 
No. 23 Harding (Ark.) lost to No. 12 Henderson State by a 38-10 count while No. 18 Wayne State (Mich.), No. 24 North Carolina-Pembroke and No. 25 Shepherd (W. Va.) all dropped out of the poll.
 
Midwestern is one of 11 teams from the newly formed Super Region Four which now includes the Lone Star Conference, Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) to receive mention in the poll.
 
Colorado State-Pueblo moved to No. 1 after claiming a 35-21 victory over Colorado Mines, while Ashland (Ohio) moved up two places to No. 6 with a 30-0 blanking of Walsh (Ohio).
 
Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) bumped ahead two spots to No. 16 after bouncing then-No. 18 Wayne State (Mich.) 24-7 last Thursday.
 
West Texas A&M moved ahead three places to No. 17 after blowing out Abilene Christian 36-0, while Michigan Tech entered the poll at No. 22 with a 28-21 win over Northwood (Mich.).
 
Grand Valley State plummeted 10 places to No. 24.
 
New Mexico Highlands, Wayne State (Mich.), HIllsdale (Mich.) and Indianapolis (Ind.) are all receiving votes.
 
MSU has now received mention in 78 of the last 79 polls dating back to the 2006 season.
 
The Mustangs hit the road to take on Abilene Christian Saturday afternoon at Shotwell Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
