LAWRENCE, Kansas - Sydnee Cole concluded her Midwestern State career in style Thursday night at the Kansas Relays.
The Phillipsburg, Kan. native returned to her home state and won the 10,000-meter run at Memorial Stadium in dominating fashion.
"She took the lead in the first 100 meters and led from wire-to-wire," MSU coach
Koby Styles said. "That was a gutsy move to get out and front and just dared people to come get here. I'd never seen that in such a big 10K. What a way to end her career at MSU."
Cole finished with a time of 36:58.06 to easily outdistance field of 21 runners as silver medalist Sara Meiners of Missouri-Kansas City finished 12 seconds behind with a time of 37:10.90.
The two-time USTFCCCA All-South Central Region performer helped the Mustangs to a consecutive Lone Star Conference championships and to their second trip to the NCAA Division II Championships last fall.
The 2009 LSC Runner of the Year bettered her top 10K time of the spring by more than 80 seconds as she also set a McMurry Relays meet record with a time of 39:21.88 two weeks ago in Abilene.
MSU freshman Ashley Flores also delivered a sterling performance for MSU setting a personal record in the 5,000-meter run breaking the 18-minute barrier with a time of 17:52.68 to finish sixth Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.
Teammate Janel Campbell placed 17th with a solid run of 18:39.11, while freshman Cara Mack placed 15th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:59.94.
Midwestern State concludes its run at the Kansas Relays Friday with the 4xmile relay with Cole, Flores, Campbell and Mack set to compete at 6 p.m.
