WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's
Chris Hagan gained All-South Central Region first-team honors Wednesday afternoon by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
The 5-9 senior from Houston led the Mustangs to a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight as the South Central Regional's Most Outstanding Player after averaging 16.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in wins over No. 17 Tarleton State, No. 9 Missouri Southern and No. 4 Central Oklahoma.
Hagan set a school record and became the first conference player to tally 50 points earlier this season at Cameron breaking a 48-year-old school record as he also scored 30-or-more points twice more against Angelo State and another time versus Eastern New Mexico.
The Sporting News Preseason All-American became just the eighth two-year player in the storied history of MSU basketball to net 1,000 career points and currently stands third among the proud group with 1,164 points trailing All-Americans Tony Forch (1,391) and Henry Crawford (1,320).
Hagan led the region and is 12th nationally with a 21.3 points per game average.
Hagan garnered second-team All-LSC South honors in 2010 after helping the Mustangs to their third-straight league title on the way to the program's first trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. He was named a Daktronics first-team all-region performer earlier this month.
Filling out the NABC All-South Central Region's first team is Missouri Southern's Skyler Bowlin, Nebraska-Omaha's Tyler Bullock, Fort Hays State's Dominique Jones, Washburn's Logan Stutz and Central Oklahoma's Dauntae Williams.
Hagan was joined on the All-South Central Region Tournament team by junior guard
Michael Loyd, who knocked down 46.2 percent of his 3-point shots on his way to a 15.3 points per game average. Loyd erupted to tie a season high with 25 points Sunday night against Missouri Southern.
Midwestern State battles No. 2 Bellarmine (Ky.) in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. (Central Time) at MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.
