Mustangs surge ahead to No. 13 in AFCA Poll

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State moved ahead four spots in the latest American Football Coaches' Association Division II poll released Monday afternoon.

The Mustangs used a convincing 52-6 win over New Mexico Highlands to secure a national ranking for a school-record 13th-straight reporting period. MSU has received votes in the AFCA poll in 48 of the last 49 reporting periods dating back to the 2006 season.

Super Region 4 continues to dominate the poll as eight of the top 15 come from the Lone Star Conference, Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association or Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The LSC and MIAA lead the way with six teams each receiving votes in the national poll.

Abilene Christian leads the LSC contingent at No. 5 after upended MIAA foe Washburn Saturday night in Topeka. The Wildcats are followed by No. 6 Texas A&M-Kingsville, who upset No. 1 Northwest Missouri last Thursday in Maryville, while West Texas A&M and MSU round out the conference's ranked clubs at Nos. 9 and 13, respectively.

Texas A&M-Commerce and Tarleton State are receiving votes.

Northwest Missouri leads the MIAA group at No. 9 followed by Missouri Western at No. 14 and Washburn (Kan.) at No. 15, while Nebraska-Omaha, Central Missouri and Pittsburg State (Kan.) are receiving votes.
