Mustangs fourth after opening round at Lion Invitational

Junior Kyla Whittley fired an opening round 80 (+8) Monday at the Lion Invitational at Tanglewood Golf Resort in Pottsboro, Texas.

POTTSBORO, Texas - The Par-72, 5,986-yard course at the Tanglewood Golf Resort made the opening round of the Lion Invitational play much longer Monday afternoon.

But Midwestern State battled through to card a 333 (+45) and stand fourth going into Tuesday's final round.

"The course was wet and the ball would not carry today," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "The course played very long but if we have a good round tomorrow, we can move into the top three."

The Mustangs trail tournament leader Angelo State by 16 strokes, but are just three shots off of the pace of Incarnate Word and Newman (Kan.), which are tied for second at 330.

Junior Kyla Whittley, a transfer from North Texas, carded an opening round 80 (+8) to place ninth on the leader board and is four strokes back of individual tournament leaders Raelyn Smith (Angelo State), Kylee Johnson (Cameron) and Jacki Marshall (Tyler JC).

Freshmen Taylor Klutts, Megan Richardson and Lindsay Burkhart also contributed countable rounds of 81, 85 and 87, respectively.

Freshman Kendra Whittley carded an 88 (+16), while Lauren Romines fired a 90 (+18) while competing in individual medalist play only.

The two-round tournament concludes Tuesday afternoon.
